Product description
Kräsen is made of dolerite, or black granite, a beautiful type of rock that is common in southern Sweden. It was designed by Ehlén Johansson, who started at IKEA in 1984. When Ehlén wanted to make candlesticks from stone, she simply visited a local stonemason and picked up some surplus pieces of dolerite. She used the material to develop three different candlesticks that were sold as a set.
The KRÄSEN candlesticks from 1987 united a centuries-old material with a modern style. Or as an internal protocol from 1987 put it: “Who said that our modern style is weak and that everything has already been done? Come on, speak! Or take a look at our new KRÄSEN candlesticks! With a natural stone base, an iron wire pole and a brass candle head, our new candlesticks build bridges between material, design and function.”
KRÄSEN was originally part of the IKEA Tomorrow programme, a 'trend department' with a different, modern design.
There are 3 candlesticks in the Kräsen series. The corner, spiral and the circle. The circle is the largest of the three.
The brass part has a patina that matches the age of the candlestick
