KAREL APPEL (1921 - 2006) studied at the Amsterdam State Academy of Art, where he met Corneille. Together with him and the artist Constant, Karel Appel is involved in the founding of the Dutch COBRA group. Through his many travels, Appel gets better and better contacts in the American art world, resulting in countless exhibitions in the US. Appel is mainly attracted to the classical themes, such as landscapes, figures and animals. Around 1963 the character of his work changes.
In 1977 Karel Appel made the famous Painter's Chest. In the box were a number of screen prints including WIZARD, a book and a sculpture.
