KAREL APPEL (1921 - 2006) studied at the Amsterdam State Academy for Visual Arts where he met Corneille . Together with him and the artist Constant, Karel Appel is involved in the foundation of the Dutch COBRA group. Due to his many travels, Appel gets better and better contacts in the American art world, resulting in countless exhibitions in the US. Appel is mainly attracted to classical themes, such as landscapes, figures and animals. Around 1963 the character of his work changes.
