Jos Verwiel (Vught, September 29, 1954) studied from 1973 to 1979 at the Academy of Art and Design in Tilburg and the Royal Academy of Art and Design in 's Hertogenbosch. He worked as a teacher at the Tilburg Art Foundation, the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven, the Center for Artistic Education in Veghel and the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht. As an artist, Verwiel has received various work grants from the Dutch Ministry of Culture and Welfare and has exhibited frequently. The work of Jos Verwiel occupies a very special place within the Dutch painting tradition. No comparison is possible with the work of other contemporary visual artists. Perhaps we find an explanation for this in his background: he started his career in the arts as a sculptor. He therefore has a lot of experience with the complexity of a spatial form and with many typical craft techniques. This is reflected in the structure of his paintings. Despite the limitation of the flat surface, Verwiel is able to create a complex world within those millimeters of depth, which is virtuoso not only in terms of color but especially in terms of form. This special painter has been working in Greece for the last 15 years on the coast of the Aegean Sea, where a large collection of paintings was created and which found their way to galleries, not only in the Netherlands but also elsewhere in Europe and America. At the moment Verwiel works in a large industrial space on the Dutch coast just below Rotterdam. Of course, that Mediterranean influence continues to be seen in the latest work that is now getting bigger, both in size and in gesture. He observes the same brilliance and brightness here on the North Sea as that so brutal light in Greece. This light is certainly the important factor for his work in which he constantly experiments with color contrast and with the layering of colors. Many images are hidden in the transparent layers of paint in Verwiel's monumental canvases, and this painter digs and buries found materials like an archaeologist. The collage technique here offers space to this constructivist who approaches his paintings as objects, as modern icons where gravity appears to determine the composition. Like a large piece of furniture or as a built stack with architectural ornaments, the composition stretches over the large canvases. Traces of advertising and fragments of a commercial glossy environment or of technical drawings and old documents light up under crystal-clear, almost fluorescent areas of color. You will recognize pieces of tarpaulin and patterns from antique wallpaper or prints from old templates. His quests in the markets of Athens, Istanbul and New Delhi provide him with this large archive of images. Sometimes small series of graphics with the same intensity and sometimes even with the same irregular surface arise from these original works. In India, he regularly works with craftsmen from a rich tradition on these masterpieces on handmade paper. These kinds of trips certainly inspire him when he again works in the privacy of his own Dutch studio on assignments from his agent, galleries and collectors who like Verwiel's developments in the field.
