Johannes Itten (Südern-Linden, November 11, 1888 - Zurich, March 25, 1967) was a Swiss painter, designer and teacher. He is best known for his theoretical work related to the Bauhaus and his color theory.
Itten resigned after an argument with Walter Gropius over commercial work within Bauhaus. Itten believed that meditation was more important than work. His work resembled the later op-art of artists such as Josef Albers, Max Bill and Bridget Riley.
In 1938 he had to leave Germany and went to live in Amsterdam. eventually he became director of the Kunstwerbeschule in Zurich.
In 1957, Willem Sandberg, director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, mounted a retrospective on the occasion of Itten's 70th birthday.
