Jean-Paul Marsman, born in Nijmegen, is a remarkable Dutch artist who lives and works in Veldhoven. His work is bought by among others: collectors, galleries, museums and companies. His work is intense and full, a conversation or discussion and one of the few artists who dares to work in more than 1 style.
On the one hand there is his colorful figurative work with graffiti influences that borders on Pop Art. Expressionist work in which image and text are equally important and reinforce each other. This work reflects the artist's rich imagination and comes from inspiration of everyday events, where his graphic advertising background is clearly visible in his work.
On the other hand, there is his hushed hyperrealist work. In which the classical craft of 17th century painting techniques forms the monumental and timeless character of his compositions. These works are characterized by the refined detail and layering of colors, which make them true masterpieces.
Two extremes in painting style, yet inseparable. His work in both styles is also characterized by contrasts in subject matter and content.
Jean-Paul: "As a little boy I knew early on what I wanted to be: soccer player, pop star, cyclist or artist. A difficult choice, but art won! After completing my training as an advertising designer and art director at Sint Lucas in Boxtel, I started working in advertising. The first years I worked as an art-director at various advertising agencies, from a small advertising studio to a large international advertising agency. There I laid the foundation for starting my own agency in 1988, at the age of 26, with 2 advertising friends under the name Checker Creative Communication. Initially very romantic in an attic room with only a few small clients. But also with a large dose of self-confidence, creativity and perseverance. Soon we made a name for ourselves as 'young dogs' in what was then a rather conservative advertising world. Those ended up being 7 great years of 24/7 creative throttle, where we grew into a professional medium-sized agency.
After those 7 intensive years I was ready for a new challenge and started design studio Untitled together with Frank van Schaik. The emphasis came to lie even more on creativity and we managed to distinguish ourselves in the field of design with guts and daring. I was also involved in art during my time in advertising. Eventually the blood runs where it cannot go and the urge to develop myself as an artist became stronger and stronger. In 1998 I decided to focus completely on my free work as an artist. A leap of faith at the time, which I have no regrets about to this day."
