Gouache by Jan Yoors series Yellow Tantra 1977. numbered 28/75. Size gouache 23 cm by 23 cm. Frame size 42 cm by 42 cm. Jan Yoors, son of Antwerp glass artist Eugène Yoors, built his career in New York after World War II. In addition to being a writer and photographer, he was above all a fascinating visual artist. His multifaceted work was inspired by his rich life experiences: from his childhood -which he largely shared with a gypsy family-, to his imprisonment by the Nazis, to his many travels and photographic reports, including in the Amazon, the Far East and Russia, as well as in New York neighborhoods such as Harlem, which experienced a true social revolution in the 1950s. The FeliXart Museum is bringing a retrospective of this powerful work, consisting of gouaches, sculptures and abstract tapestries, for the first time in 30 years. The fresh colorful compositions of the tapestries are often enlargements of scratched wall photographs. In this way, Yoors manages to bridge the gap between traditional European culture and ephemeral American Pop Art. Although Jan Yoors exhibited in New York with Jan Cox and René Magritte in 1957, his work is almost unknown in Flanders, despite a good reception in the American press. His work is included in important collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. On 26.01.2015, a stamp was issued in Belgium of this work under the name Tapestry: Jan Yoors "Tantra in Yellow" 1977.
