Jan Wolkers Jan Wolkers is one of the most famous writers and artists of the post-war Netherlands. In the 1960s and 1970s, he published many visual novels and collections of stories about sexuality, death and religion - books that were shocking to Christian tribes in particular. Wolkers' stories are dismissed by some critics as "a vagina on every page. Despite the fierce reactions, Wolkers' books sold eagerly, and the film adaptation of his most famous novel, Turks fruit, broke all attendance records with 3.3 million tickets sold. Official literary recognition for his work does not come to Wolkers until years later. Too late, according to the author himself. Out of anger over this, Wolkers refuses many literary awards. Wolkers himself has always considered himself primarily a sculptor and painter. After the war, Jan Wolkers studies sculpture at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1949 to 1953. In 1947, he married his first wife, Maria de Roo. They have two sons and a little daughter named Eva, who dies in the bathtub at the age of two. This accident Wolkers will later write about in his novel Een roos van vlees (1963). Eva's death plays Jan and Maria apart, resulting in a divorce. In 1958 Wolkers marries again, to Annemarie Nauta, who is partly the model for Olga, the main character in Turks fruit (1969). This marriage does not last long either. In the mid-sixties, Wolkers has an affair with Karina Gnirrep, a seventeen-year-old sprightly girl across the street. Wolkers offers her a light on the street and a little later admires her buttocks in his home studio. Not long after, she moves in with him. What is Jan Wolkers like as an artist? Wolkers studies fine art in The Hague, Amsterdam and Salzburg, where he is taught by Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù. Wolkers paints many abstract works, which are influenced by nature. For example, he creates works of art with poop. "Have you ever looked closely at the structure of that shit, in which you can still see bits of undigested grass? How can that be dirty?" he says about it in an interview. He also designs many political and social posters, including for the Komitee Bevrijding Vietnam, the Communist Party, the P.S.P. and the anti-apartheid movement. Jan Wolkers is one of the first artists worldwide to make sculptures entirely out of glass. Due to the use of this delicate material, Wolkers' work proves to be extremely vulnerable. His works of art are regularly damaged; for example, his Auschwitz monument (1977) in Amsterdam has been the target of vandalism several times. Works of art are also vandalized on Texel and in Wolkers' birthplace, Oegstgeest. On October 15, 2007, doctors discover that Jan Wolkers suffers from liver cirrhosis that can no longer be treated. A few days later, a week before he would turn 82, he dies in his sleep. His cremation ceremony is broadcast live on Dutch television, an honor not given to many writers. Wolkers' ashes are buried under the tulip tree in his garden.
