Course:
In 1945, Sierhuis started an evening course at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, but soon left due to a conflict. He then went to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and to the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague.
Sierhuis has mainly worked in Amsterdam and since the mid-1980s in Spain, but has also made a number of trips through Europe and America.
Sierhuis is an expressionist painter. In 1947 and 1948 he was involved with De Experimentelen (the Dutch predecessor of Cobra) and with Cobra, but was too young to become a member. Sierhuis initially made paintings of naturalistic landscapes. In the 1950s and 1960s he mainly made abstract works. In the mid-1960s, the figure in his paintings became more important again. He thus moved on to more figurative themes. Sierhuis taught at Ateliers '63 in 1968. From 1970 to 1980 he taught painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. He has also taught at the Amersfoortse, the Rijks- and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.
Exhibitions and awards:
In 1956 Sierhuis received the Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze portrait prize and in 1957 he received the Royal Subsidy for Painting. In 1989 Sierhuis received the Sandberg Prize. In 2002 he became Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. Sierhuis' work has been exhibited in Japan, the United States, South America and several European countries. In the Netherlands, his work is included in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, among others.
