Kanbier counted himself among the Neosymbolists. In 1987 he had his first solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden. In 1989, he presented the manifesto of Neo-Symbolism at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam).
After periods in Paris, Prague and Friesland, Kanbier worked in his native Leiden. His work is part of the art collections of Queen Juliana, Prince Willem-Alexander, the Upper House building in The Hague, De Lakenhal in Leiden, Wim Kok, Hedy d'Ancona, Rob Kampheus and Felix Rottenberg, among others.
