Product description
About the furniture. This sofa is a design by Wikkelsø and put into production by Niels Eilersen's company. It is a spectacularly shaped 3-seater sofa with a very fine frame of full teak wood. The design details are wonderful, just look at the beautiful turn in the armrest or the beautiful black upholstery done in genuine leather. The legs, which taper towards each other at the bottom, are not only visually strong but also structurally challenging, they are proof that both design and construction are of an exceptionally high level. This Mid - Century furniture has been a true design classic for years and is recognized worldwide as a world-class design. In a very nice original condition and can rightly be called very beautiful. Traces of use so minimal that they are almost negligible. About the designer. Very little biographical information can be found about the Danish architect-designer Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) today. Nevertheless, the rich, organic quality of his designs on the current vintage market confirms his status as an active proponent of Scandinavian modernism in the postwar era. Like most Danish designers at the time, Wikkelsø studied at a leading academy. In doing so, his specialty was cabinet design and manufacture. He eventually graduated from the Copenhagen School of Arts & Crafts. He later held positions with furniture maker Jacob Kjaer and the architectural firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen. In 1944, Wikkelsø moved to Aarhus to work as an interior designer. In 1954, he began designing his own furniture and a few years later established a workshop. Like many of his Danish contemporaries - Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, for example - Wikkelsø's designs emphasize formal simplicity and sculptural silhouettes. Wikkelsø's background in cabinet making gave him a broad knowledge and understanding of materials, this combined with a fine eye for detail were the ingredients for some unprecedentedly beautiful designs. He worked with teak and rosewood, forming delicate sculptural forms with them. Wikkelsø believed that furniture should be built to last, while relieving and relaxing the body, as well as being pleasing to the eye. Well-known designs from Wikkelsø's career include T118 Coffee Table (ca. 1950s), Gyngestol Rocking Chair (1958) and Model 91 Lounge Chair and Ottoman for Mikael Laursen (ca. 1959). A number of Danish manufacturers produced Wikkelsø's designs, including C.F. Christensen, Holger Christiansen, Eilersen, Farstrup, Silkeborg and Søren Willadsen.
