Product description
The 'Rietveld HOPMI chair' was designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1932. Originally only 2 copies of this design were made which were thought to be lost for years. Until in 2008 the heir of Professor Lanjouw delivered a bag with steel tubes, screws and pieces of plywood to the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. The loose pieces were identified at the museum as parts of the vanished HOPMI chair. This design by Rietveld forms an important link in Rietveld's tubular steel furniture. The special feature of the chair is that the user could assemble the loose tubes into a chair himself with the help of torpedo nuts. The torpedo nut, which has right and left-hand threads, was a patent of the Hollandsche Patent Metaal Industrie (HOPMI) of Utrecht, hence the name. 2 plywood boards, the seat and back, complete the chair. On the initiative of architect Victor Veldhuijzen van Zanten, 400 copies were produced under license from the Rietveld heirs in 2013, a one-off!!! exactly after the original drawings in the Central Museum archives. 150 x series 1 and 250 x series 2. This is number 079/250 of series 2 from 2013. The chair is in perfect condition, has hardly been used.
