Product description
The "Rietveld HOPMI chair" was designed by Gerrit Th. Rietveld in 1932.
Our chair was made in 2013 in a limited edition of 150 pieces namely nr 95 of 150.
The chair is in a very good condition. Including book.
Dimensions: total height 87 cm, armrest height 75 cm, width 46.5 cm, depth: 46.5 cm.
Material: steel and plywood.
At the time of designing the HOPMI chair, Rietveld was already well known for his design of the Red Blue Chair (1917) and the Rietveld Schröder House (1924) in Utrecht and further because of his membership in 'de Stijl'.
The six tubular elements that form the frame of the 'Rietveld HOPMI chair' are joined together with torpedo nuts. The torpedo nut, which has right and left-hand threads, was a patent of the Hollandsche Patent Metaal Industrie 'HOPMI' of Utrecht. Two plywood boards, the seat and back, complete the chair.
No more than two copies of this version of the 'Rietveld HOPMI chair' were manufactured around 1932, one of which came into the possession of Prof. Lanjouw of Utrecht and the other in later years to a Swiss family. Lanjouw's heirs gave their copy on loan to the Central Museum in Utrecht in 2008, thus rediscovering this 'Rietveld HOPMI chair'.
With copyright permission from the Rietveld heirs, the 'Rietveld HOPMI chair' was produced in multiple copies in 2013 and thus became available to enthusiasts.
Very light scratch seat.
