Biography. Paul Bromberg (1893-1949), a former pupil of the renowned architects and designers Jac. van den Bosch and Hendrik Berlage, became the first designer of Metz & Co's interior department in 1918. Bromberg not only designed furniture for the department store's own collection, he was also responsible for purchasing Art Craft supplies, for which he often traveled throughout Europe. In 1924, Bromberg began working for the Pander company, where he designed unique interiors as well as furniture, often mass-produced. At the time, Pander was the largest and best-known furniture manufacturer in the Netherlands, with stores in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Bromberg emphasized functionality over ornamentation in his designs. His designs offered a very distinctive character through the combination of different types of wood in the same piece. Bromberg was also a passionate design theorist. Through exhibitions, lectures, model houses and publications, he presented his visions of new ways of living. His unique designs and tireless efforts as a publicist made Bromberg enormously influential in the development of interior design in the Netherlands in the first half of the 20th century.
