Product description
Henk J.A.M. van der Plas
Born: The Hague 1 June 1936
Education: Royal Academy of Art
Henk van der Plas belonged to the so-called 'The Group' of constructivists in The Hague. In 1962 Henk van der Plas worked in Paris. Two years later, back in The Hague, he devoted himself to making paintings and linocuts with organic motifs. He made beach assemblages from driftwood, rope and cork. Tight forms, experiments with light and shadow, tight compositions and geometric shapes have dominated and characterized the work of Henk van der Plas for many years. However, this changed after several visits to Suriname. The artist fell under the spell of the tropical atmosphere and the beauty of Suriname's nature; the overwhelming colors of the plants, flowers and seeds he found there. From that moment on, Henk van der Plas radically changed his way of working.
Henk passed away on January 3, 2009 in his hometown of The Hague at the age of 72.
Van der Plas was active within his profession. Among other things, he was a board member of the Haagse Kunstkring and co-founder of the Graphic Shop Inkt, which was defunct in 2008.
