Helma Kotoun grew up in Zierikzee as the daughter of a mussel fisherman so that she feels connected to the sea and the power of nature.
She was the owner of a Jazz café for a while and later devoted herself to the arts. She trained as a visual artist with Kees van de Wetering and Mart Bechtold.
Her works are an expression of the pleasure she takes from nature. Initially she worked from studios in Moriaanshoofd in Zeeland and in Knokke-Heist. Nowadays she paints from her home in Goes, Zeeland and on her travels through Andalusia, Italy and other destinations that she visits for large parts of the year. She paints colorful expressionist works with mostly cows, horses, people and landscapes as subjects. Her work is highly sought after and has many admirers, including several well-known Dutch people.
