Hans van der Lek was born on March 15, 1936 in The Hague and died on March 9, 2001 in his home on Schlegelstraat in The Hague. He followed his education with two years of evening courses at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and from 1954-56, on the basis of awarded scholarships, he took classes at the Free Academy in The Hague. Pupil of Willem Hussem and Nol Kroes. In 1956 he exhibited for the first time together with Aat Hoogte at the Bennewitz art dealership on Noordeinde in The Hague. In 1958 he has his first solo exhibition in the Galerie de Posthoorn.
Hans van der Lek has been active as a painter for half a century and in that time has played a prominent role in the art world in The Hague in particular. He has realized a varied, high-quality and unconventional oeuvre. Pop Art has played an important role in his career; he was its first representative in the Netherlands. In 1961, the group portrait the "Collaborators" of 28 painters from The Hague was made in his studio on the Houtmarkt. Van der Lek has been a member of various artist collectives and maintained friendships with, among others, Willem Hussem, Nol Kroes, Aat Hoogte, Theo Bitter and Aart van den IJssel. In the period 1977-1998 he also taught at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
