Han Hulsbergen (Hengelo 1901-1989 Blaricum)
Johannes Evert (Han) Hulsbergen (Hengelo 1901-1989 Blaricum) already knew as a child that he wanted to become an artist. From the age of eight he painted and drew from books. After high school, he started working as a photographer and retouched portrait photos in order to earn money for the Amsterdam art academy. After he had collected a nice amount of money from photography - he temporarily had a photo studio in Middelburg - Hulsbergen took private lessons at the 'Normaal School' in Amsterdam, in preparation for the entrance exam for the Rijksacademie. He was admitted to the academy and received painting lessons from H.J. Wolter and R. Roland Holst and in sculpture by J. Bronner. Hulsbergen received training at the academy in which a lot of attention was paid to painting techniques, correct use of materials and preparation of the canvas. This in-depth study of paint and colors gave him the basis with which he could become a versatile artist, who did not rely on working in one style but always continued to experiment.
Hulsbergen's success started during his studies: he received his first major assignment for a set design in Amsterdam's Rika Hopper Theater (now Desmet Studios). Han also received assignments in the summers, when he traveled to Mallorca and southern Spain. He painted, among other things, gypsy girls and children's portraits for the Fernandez family in Granada.
