Product description
Vintage cocoon lamp by Friedl Wauer for Goldkant Leuchten - Germany 1960s/70s
This specimen is in very good condition. No damage to the cocoon. As visible in the pictures, the frame is a bit oxidized which explains the green color (of the "ribs"). But actually suits this vintage lamp and gives this specimen a unique look.
The cocoon material, a synthetic resin originally developed in the United States for military/maritime purposes (to protect ex-war equipment from the weather - "mothballing"), was introduced to the design world by the Castiglioni brothers in the early 1960s. Spraying the resin in layers over the metal frame created a unique texture that gives the lamp its distinctive look. Later, this technique was also introduced in Germany, among others, by the company Goldkant Leuchten.
Although Friedl Wauer is not as well known as other designers of the Mid - Century period, her work remains of interest to collectors and vintage design enthusiasts. The fact that not much detailed information about her is available may contribute to the appeal of her work among collectors looking for rare and unique pieces.
