Serpentine is a deep green crystal of hydrated magnesium silicate, rarely spotted or spattered, that resembles a snake or snakeskin. Desire Dimensions artwork: 80 x 129 x 50 cm Dimensions with pedestal: 130 x 140 x 60 cm PLEASE NOTE; The artwork is so heavy that professional transport equipment is required to move it. Gladman settled in Harare in 1983 and began sculpting in 1985. His role model was Samson Kuvhengurwa, whose highly innovative work deeply impressed him. Gladman depicted the daily lives of the people he knew. He sharply expressed the suffering of the poor and unemployed. "I stand for the poor! I am lucky because I can scream through the stone!" He worked mainly in Springstone, using unworked parts of the stone and different textures to great effect. He also made some striking works in Opal Stone and other materials. Gladman's sudden death in 2001 was a sad loss to the art community in Zimbabwe.
