Gijs Frieling, born 1966 in Amsterdam did his education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and at the Rijksakademie, both in Amsterdam. In 1999 he received the prestigious prize: Prix de Rome and in 2009 he won the Cobra Art Prize. In 2012, he was nominated for the Dutch Design Award 'Communication'. In addition to paintings and works on paper, Frieling often creates large (wall) paintings on commission. Such as for Museum Valkhof, Nijmegen; Kathedrale Basiliek Sint Bavo Haarlem; Domkerk Utrecht, among others. Works by his hand were included in various museums including: Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, the North Brabant Museum, Museum de Lakenhal Leiden, Design Museum Den Bosch.
