Company:
In 1921, the Friesche Stoel- en Houtwarenfabriek, Fristho, was established in Huizum (then not yet part of Leeuwarden). Sounds Frisian, but the founder was a Belgian who was married to a lady from Surhuisterveen. Fristho moved to Franeker in 1924. In the early 1950s, Fristho attracted young designers to the new style, including the American designer William Watting, the German designer Rudolf Glatzel and the Danish designer Inger Klingenberg (1932-1997). In particular, Watting's ' Modern Art' collection has fueled Frishto's new direction in furniture with Scandinavian influences. In 1956, Fristho appointed Chinese-Dutch designer Kho Liang Ie (1927-1975) and graphic designer Wim Crouwel to lead the company in a new direction characterized by innovation and modernist values. In the 1950's and 60's Fristho was very successful producing a wide range of modernist furniture including wall units, coffee tables, and dining tables. These designs reflected a new era of consumer affluence and technological advancement.
In the 1970s, Fristho sold their furniture in cities such as Los Angeles, Paris and Milan. the factory was closed forever in 1978.
