Product description
The letterpress board cut La Chaise Bleue (1994) is the artist's first print proof, not numbered, thus unique. La Chaise Bleue, the symbol of Nice, was the inspiration for this artwork. Fon Klement was a self-taught artist. He drew and painted, but was best known for his typical letterpress boardcut technique. He became best known in the 1980s-1990s for his colorful floral still lifes. In general, but especially with a first proof, proof of authenticity is important This can be a certificate of authenticity or a photograph of the edition number, signature, sticker or stamp. In the case of the present first trial, Fon's typical signature and the two fingerprints function as such. This form of evidence graces the board cut in the lower right corner, unlike quite a few circulating impressions without this signature. The fingerprints came about as follows. To a few drops of paint he added some siccative to shorten the drying time. Then he dipped his right middle finger into the paint and twice, from left to right, made an impression on the print with the tip of it. Therefore, the the second fingerprint is always slightly thinner than the first. The way he unwound the finger makes the print look like that of a thumb! Finally, he signed in pencil over his fingerprints - adding the year - and the color of the pencil is darker on the first print. The written text is in the artist's handwriting. Important to watch out for, as there were quite a few unsigned or alternatively signed prints in circulation in the past. At the Grafiekbiennale Grafiek (Laren, 1990) and at the International Grafiekbiennale (Maastricht, 1993) he was awarded the audience prize, reflecting his popularity with a large audience.
