Elles BB goes all out ! Nijverdal artist Elles Blankenstein - Bezemer (1947) initially used themes from her immediate surroundings. In recent work, she now opts for acrylic along with mixed media.
She prefers to translate her recent predilection for abstraction with great gesture on large-scale canvases, which are cut or pleated where necessary. The way she applies structures are striking, the colour choices harmonious. In summary, her works illustrate the importance she attaches to innovation, use of colour and technique.
Although she does not paint realistically, she is guided by nature and music. All her work has a dramatic, somewhat alienating undertone. Harmonising bright colours stand out against a dark background; deep red shades are bathed in gold; one eye or two behind a clown mask or a grey mist catch the viewer's eye.
Abstract expressionism appeals to her for its freedom and spontaneity.
Yet she also likes to paint work that balances between abstraction and figuration where 'movement in the work' is apparent.
What she seeks above all is pleasure in making beautiful things, which she places in her environment, which is why she does not like to sell or exhibit recent work.
