Product description
"hand in hand" gouache and pastel. Signed and dated 87.
Elisabeth Chabin is a French visual artist, painter, engraver, lithographer, illustrator and sculptor born in 1944.
Figurative in her themes - notably the human body, nudes, embracing couples and trees - her sources of inspiration can be traced back to several trips she made to Morocco, where the discovery of the desert oriented her pictorially towards "a denser material that catches the eye", just as the summer of 1984 on the Plateau d'Albion made her aware of the formal analogies between the trunks of dead almond trees and human bodies. However, she then moved closer to lyrical abstraction, with a free exuberance of form and color that gradually led her to pure research into form and light, in which she did not disavow a kinship with Mark Rothko, before finally "returning to an essential figurative style that asserts itself as an exploration of her relationship with the worlds of the living, with nature and with her spiritual aspirations".
