Eduardo Chillida Juantegui (January 10, 1924 - August 19, 2002) was a Spanish Basque sculptor. Born and died in San Sebastian.
Chillida was among the most important sculptors of the twentieth century.
From 1943 to 1946, Chillida studied architecture in Madrid. In 1949, he moved to Paris, where he set up a studio. In 1949, his work was exhibited in the Salon de Mai of the Musée National d´Art Moderne. In 1950 or 1951, he returned to San Sebastian. From 1959 to 1977 he participated in several documenta exhibitions in Kassel.
In the 1980s and 1990s, important retrospectives of his work were organized in New York, Bonn, Münster, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and San Sebastian.
In his early works, Chillida still concentrated on the human form (mostly torsos and busts executed in stone). Later, his sculptures became more massive and abstract and he created more monumental works for public spaces (often in concrete or Corten steel).
