From the artist’s Une Danse Macabre series
Limited tot 500 copies. This being No 73.
Bille meets various French writers who have taken refuge in Switzerland during the first world conflict; Romain Rolland, Charles Baudoin, René Arcos and Pierre-Jean Jouve.
He realizes the cover of “Poème contre le grand crime “of the latter, presenting a crowned skeletal rider, mowing a meadow on a background of glowing fire. This collaboration brings up the idea of a common macabre dance project. Bille begins his boards with the idea of carrying out his project with Jouve. But his work is progressing too slowly for the writer who will publish his work without waiting for Bille's boards.
If the representation of death in “une dance macabre “conforms to traditional iconography, the paradigm used changes. Bille no longer places death here as the avenging of inequalities in the afterlife but places it as the ally of them. The temporality of the personalization of death is moved from the afterlife to the present. In “une dance macabre “ death does not make men equal but joins forces with the powerful to make the weakest its victims in an unequal scheme.
