Very rarely does furniture from an American manufacturer appear on the market in Europe, so this beautiful desk also has a special story attached to it. This genuine Mid Century desk was made by the Drexel company and was designed by their employed designer Barney Flagg. The Drexel firm was founded in 1903 in the village of the same name. It lies at the foot of the famous Blue Ridge Mountains in the state of North Carolina. Six business partners started a furniture factory there that would grow into one of the largest and most renowned in the country. In the early years, oak wood was used for the production of furniture, and later various other types of wood appeared in the assortment. As early as the 1930s the management decided to employ their own designers, some with a European background, in this way they could quickly respond to trends and wishes from the market. The brand acquires a great fame with "Euro Inspired" furniture in such styles as Queen Ann to Louis XV. After the war they were one of the first American manufacturers to use the Scandinavian style for various new collections. The furniture is of unprecedented class, in both material selection, design and also construction. The relatively unknown designer Barney Flagg designs a very sleek and at the time extremely modern series under the name "Parallel." The program includes various cabinets and storage furniture, tables and a desk. The brand sells its furniture throughout America and manages to attract a relatively young and affluent audience through clever marketing in home and garden magazines, yet Drexel furniture from this series would never reach the masses in huge numbers, simply because of the high prices and high end quality. This copy. This desk was purchased in 2023 from its first owners in Eindhoven, Netherlands. It was part of a complete Mid Century inventory consisting of high end American and English furniture until the beginning of this year. The first owners bought the desk in America and already moved it to England in the 1960s and eventually to the Netherlands, where they went to work. The furniture was always handled carefully, the lady of the house pointed out to everyone all these years, how precious the pieces in the interior had been. The desk consists of a construction of Walnut wood and has 4 drawers. 3 of them are the same size, 1 is extra deep and fully extendable, also they have beautifully finished wooden handles / knobs with a brass inlay, a wonderful example of refined craftsmanship. Below the top there is also another large drawer, this fifth drawer is extra wide and almost inconspicuous. On the right side there is a so-called drop leaf leaf, which can easily be folded up to create more workspace. Again, with regard to the minimal seams, the locking hardware is of an unprecedented high level of finish. It has been completely checked by our craftsmen and restored where necessary, we deliberately did not opt for a total restoration because the base of this unique piece of furniture is still so beautiful and the patina fits perfectly. Are you looking for a unique American desk? A worldwide sought after and rare design piece? Then take advantage of this unique opportunity.
