Dirk Baksteen (Rotterdam March 29, 1886 – Antwerp September 24, 1971); Painter, watercolorist but above all etcher from the Kempen. Has worked in various decoration studios since he was thirteen and in the meantime takes evening classes at the Rotterdam Academy. Short training at the Academy in Antwerp (1911). Settled in Mol (1912) and Achterbos (1913) as a friend and disciple of Jakob Smits. He meets the American etcher William Sherwood, who introduces him to all the secrets of engraving techniques and also introduces him to American etchers.
