Portrait 'Tyras II' / Favorite Great Dane of Otto von Bismarck, circa 1900, Oil Painting on Canvas
Otto Fürst von Bismarck (1815-1898) was an absolute dog enthusiast since childhood. He owned a total of 14 dogs throughout his life, and his absolute favorite at the time was called "Tyras," who was shot while poaching and died in the prince's arms. Due to the prolonged mourning over "Tyras'" death, "Kaiser Wilhelm" gifted him a new puppy on May 11, 1896, which was actually a true "Great Dane" from a Danish breeding. Until then, such great protectors were known as the "Reichshund," a term apparently coined by Bismarck. He named his new Great Dane "Tyras II" and ensured there would be no more "Reichs-Mixed-Dogs"; from then on, these giant dogs were called "Deutsche Doggen" (German Mastiffs).
Provenance: Heirloom from my grandmother (maternal side), who always mentioned during her lifetime that it was the dog in the oil painting of Prince "Otto von Bismarck," and a famous animal painter painted it. She received it from her father "Oswald Jäger" (Hessen, near Frankfurt a. Main), my great-grandfather.
Format: 70 cm wide x 58 cm and approximately 7 cm including frame.
Private Sale, therefore no liability for material defects, guarantee or return.
The Painting No. 5 of Another Dog Serves as an Example of the Work by "Hr: von Zügel."
Das Gemälde könnte mal gereinigt werden. Ansonsten sieht es sehr gut aus.
