Product description
20th century Belgian school circa 1970 Bottom signature of the Belgian artist Daniel de Clercq Belgian artist who studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Mons. Painting on canvas with original simple wooden frame Dimensions: 70cm x 60cm Very good condition. This beautiful painting entitled "Le crépuscule des Dieux" (Twilight of the Gods) is a surrealist work featuring a setting rich in symbolism and intriguing elements. At the center of the composition, an abstract figure with angular, organic forms seems to emerge from an irregular platform. This figure evokes a fantastic creature, adding a dreamlike dimension to the work. The background is dominated by a bright yellow color, creating a luminous, unreal atmosphere. A reddish, textured, gradated sun hangs in the sky, accentuating the surrealist mood. To the left, mast-like vertical structures bear flag-like geometric shapes, adding a touch of mystery and incongruity. This painting is a high-quality oil on canvas, framed in black. The color palette is predominantly bright yellow, complemented by touches of green, red, black and bluish gray. The style is clearly surreal, fusing dreamlike elements and incongruous imagery into a strange but coherent composition. The central element of the painting is a bird-like creature, seated on a raft-like promontory that seems to float on a sea of small black blocks. The bird is depicted in a graceful, almost melancholy posture, its head turned backwards as if watching an event out of the viewer's sight. Its color is a mixture of bluish gray and pale pink, and it features textured, almost feathery details. On the right-hand side of the composition, there's a thin vertical red cylinder that seems to be falling or flowing down from the raft. This reinforces the painting's surreal, elusive quality. Behind the bird, we see a bright yellow sun with red hues inside, which is placed in the background like a large star. This sun is surreal, as it seems almost like an abstract patch of color instead of a traditional celestial object. The raft or platform on which the bird stands is composed of wavy brown and black lines, giving the impression of old wood or a ruined structure. Part of the "raft" is missing, creating an irregular hole that adds a touch of incongruity to the scene. Two vertical poles or masts stand to the left of the image, seemingly holding triangular flags of different colors. The flags are small and faded-looking, contributing to the painting's dreamlike atmosphere. The sea below seems to be made up of numerous small black boulders or rocks, adding a particular texture to the scene. The background is a light yellow, textured, fine-grained surface. The whole composition has an enigmatic, slightly melancholy mood. The surreal elements help to create an intriguing image that sparks the viewer's imagination and leaves room for many interpretations. The combination of fine painting technique and surrealist content makes this painting a unique and fascinating work of art.
