Alexandre LEONOV was born into a family of artists in Moscow on October 12, 1932. After an initial training at an art school, he continued his studies at the Leningrad Academy of Fine Arts. But more than his formal education, it was his childhood impressions of the Russian and European avant-garde atmosphere that contributed to the development of his artistic personality.
Later, after the end of the Stalinist era, marked by the dictatorship of official ideology in art, it was in museum storerooms and on numerous visits to the extraordinary George Kostaki collection in Moscow that Alexander Leonov deepened his knowledge of the Russian avant-garde. It's obvious that, given the conditions of life in the USSR in the late fifties and early sixties, the new generation of avant-garde painters to which Alexander Leonov belonged was doomed to clandestinity, with no hope of ever exhibiting their work in the USSR or the West.
