This plywood sofa owes its aesthetics mainly to its functionality and materials. Cor Alons chooses beech plywood because of the properties and possibilities of the material itself which is very sculptural. The decorative elements of this sofa follow from the feasibility of the plywood. For example, the wooden armrests have a straight, wing-like appearance. Also from the side, the wooden slats that hold the backrest gracefully experience a curved position. Whatever perspective you take on it, each angle provides a different visual excitement.
Cor Alons (1892-1967) was a Dutch designer who studies at the Minerva Academy in Groningen and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. After working for H. Pander & Zn, Alons opened his own office together with Frits Spanjaard. Alons' designs usually fit within the Functionalism theme and he often opts for furniture with a clear structure, which is also reflected in this design.
