High. 35cm - Diam. 25cn - Diam. base 20cm. Neo-classical motifs in Art Nouveau style. Clément Massier, French 1844-1917.... A gifted ceramicist born into a generations-long family of potters who worked in Vallauris, France in the second half of the 19th century, Massier transcended his family's métier. Instead of creating utensils as a means unto themselves, he used the ceramic medium as an aesthetic platform to create art. Massier won many international awards during his lifetime, including a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle world exhibition in Paris in 1889. At the exhibition, it was Massier's ceramic glazing techniques, using turquoise metallic glaze, that caught the world's attention. Massier's metallic glazes produce the dual properties of reflectivity and transparency to create iridescence. To achieve this, Massier fired his ceramics in a three-layer process at progressively lower temperatures. He applied the final glaze made of a metallic clay bond with a brush. When the blackened vessels had cooled completely, they were polished until they shimmered to reveal his iridescent inspirations of nature. Each piece produced was a unique object that revealed not only the artist's hand, but also the variable effects of temperature, natural elements and their interactive relationships. His glazes are illusory interpretations assembled into fired pottery. Conversely, the solidity of the ceramic object hides its impermanent nature that constantly changes in light. This duality naturally inherent in this art medium is a theme Massier echoes in his subject matter. This bowl has been in the possession of an owner for about 40 years.
