When you enter the pictorial world of Chantal Borremans, you go back to the beginning of humanity, or at least to a time when the concept of scripture was in the air and civilizations were on the verge of inventing the signs that would eventually capture and convey oral messages in written words. When you look at her paintings, you feel like you are in a kind of Atlantis where all future alphabets and icons will soon appear. But not only this aspect of her art is fascinating: the entire atmosphere bathes us in a universe populated by elusive forms we recognize from our collective memory. These magnificent works of art speak of an imagined prehistory and of memories of very old mysteries. To achieve this difficult goal, Chantal Borremans mixes different techniques and materials on her canvases, panels and terracottas. Another source of inspiration is the magic of the coast in Ostend, where she now lives. Sandbanks, beaches, dunes, skies, clouds, fog and waves are reinterpreted in lush canvases and watercolors.
