Cees Vis was a real Zaankanter, born in 1926 in Zaandijk. A child of his time. He trained as a drawing teacher at the National Academy and, like so many young artists at the time, he moved to Paris. He met Appel, Corneille and Constant there. Even before Cobra was founded, he was impressed by the work of Appel and Corneille when they exhibited as 'De Experimentelen' in Amsterdam. "That's how it should be, I thought," says Vis, who has continued to stick to that same style of freedom and cheerfulness. "I want to remain myself, not jump around or follow trends." It has produced a consistent oeuvre, in the recognizable handwriting of an artist who greatly enjoys the craft. He actually enjoys the difficult process of six-color lino printing. In the 1970s, Vis became fascinated with linoleum printing.
Cees Vis's work has been exhibited at home and abroad.
