Rare and beautiful ensemble, this set of two double candlesticks and a table clock. The ornate ensemble was purchased by my parents in the 70s, early 80s and was purchased as a set, and is therefore being sold as a set. The candlesticks and table clock are made of lucite/acrylic, a hard plastic, with brass/gilt details. Due to the use of a single piece of bent and twisted acrylic to form the whimsical base, this candlestick is often called the pretzel (Prretzel). The design of the candlesticks is by Elaine Bscheider for Dorothy C. Thorpe. Dorothy Thorpe, based in California, began designing glass pieces in the 1940s. Her work was initially sold in a small Hollywood gift store and was soon picked up by larger, well-known stores. Her clientele grew to include such famous names as Clarke Gable, Princess Grace of Monaco and the Shah of Iran. In the mid-20th century, she began experimenting with Lucite to design these Pretzel candlesticks generally attributed to Elaine Bscheider for Dorothy Thorpe Inc. The candlesticks were never marked, but were sold with the Dorothy Thorpe label. Operating on a penlite battery and functioning properly, the clock has some craquelé in the lucite, but is undamaged and glass on the outside edges. The two double candlesticks are in excellent condition with minimal signs of use.
