Gustave Camus, born April 4, 1914 in Châtelet and died June 9, 1984 in Mons, is a Belgian expressionist painter. At the age of 14 he apprenticed as a house painter, but he stopped this activity as soon as his art could make him live, in 1939. He took drawing lessons from the sculptor Eugène Paulus at the Charleroi Industrial School (1930-1934 ) and from Leon Van den Houten at the University of Labor (1932-1937). He founded the group Living Art in the Land of Charleroi (1933) with Georges Wasterlain. After the war, critics confirmed his talent and he taught painting and drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts of Mons (1951-1976), of which he was the director from 1961 to 1966 and from 1975 to 1976. He was an Impressionist (1930-1946), although closer to Fauvism than Monet. It was after a trip to Brittany that he initiated his second period that will mark his work more deeply (1946-1950).
