Product description
mixed media, canvas stretcher and frame, original painting. 60 cm x 80 cm. 2024. This work is part of a series of works made between 2000 and 2024 in which I attempt to migrate experiences of landscape into an experience of painting, for both the artist and the viewer. I draw my experiences specifically from the landscape and mountains of the Pyrenees and the moorland and coastal landscapes of West Penwith, Cornwall. In working, I start from a memory or the memory of an experience. As I paint, ashes, bitumen and memory accumulate on the canvas, the process and experience of making the painting become paramount. The painting thus becomes a new experience, usurping the vestige of memory and imagination. I have lived in Ariège since 2016. My current work is concerned with a phenomenological approach to the representation of mountain landscapes. During my postdoctoral period (PhD obtained in 2014) I lived in Cornwall, UK. During this period, my research and practice aimed to appropriate the experience of bouldering for art by considering how the physical demands of bouldering (a form of climbing) might inform concepts of visual representation and performance in art. More details of my work can be found at andywhall.com This work will be shipped/delivered on a stretcher. Also, please keep in mind that these paintings have traces of the temporal processes used in their creation; i.e. paint on the sides of the stretched canvas, cracks in the thickest areas of paint, drips, etc. These are all part of the artwork and are valued as part of the creative process.
