Product description
Augusta Berbuto (1914-1986) Belgium Chalk on paper Size: 52cm x 33cm Condition: small stains visible on photos and small folds This work by Augusta Berbuto presents two nude figures embracing in a stylized landscape. The lines are fluid and elegant, capturing a delicate intimacy. The background shows a clear sky with an abstract form resembling a cloud or stylized face, adding a surreal dimension to the scene. A bare, black tree stands to the right, contrasting with the softness of the figures. Shades of blue and gray create a peaceful atmosphere. ### Augusta Berbuto's biography Augusta Berbuto, a renowned Belgian artist, was born in Liège. She trained at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Liège from 1939 to 1951, where she took drawing classes before turning to sculpture under the guidance of professors Marceau Gillard and Adelin Salle. On completion of her studies, she was awarded the government's grand silver medal for sculpture. In 1952, Berbuto began exhibiting regularly in Liège and other Belgian cities. Initially recognized for her plaster sculptures, she gradually gained recognition for her pen-and-ink drawings. She also illustrated several books and collections of poems. In 1963, her career was marked by an important project: one of her drawings was selected for the international exhibition "105 Portraits de l'Oiseau-qui-n'existe- pas", based on a poem by Claude Avelin, presented at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris. Today, his works can be found in prestigious collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
