Vintage Design In 1865, the French chemist Théophile-Jules Pelouze experimented with the coloring of glass and tested, among other things, the mineral selenium, which he added to a glass batch prepared with carbonic soda. As he described in an 1866 essay, he obtained a transparent mass ''of a beautiful orange tending to red, reminiscent of the color of certain varieties of topaz, hessonite (kanel stone) and hyacinth (zircon) (5th Orangeroth 3/10, 9th Clay, Chevreul)''. The results of his experiments proved reproducible, but it was not until 1891 that Franz Welz of Bohemia acquired a German patent for the production of pink and orange glass using selenium.[1] Selenium was also used to decolorize the initially yellow-green glass mass. Depending on the composition of the glass mass, it colors red, orange, brown or pink. The terms ''selenium glass'' and ''rosalin glass'' are therefore not synonymous.[2] The new glass color first appeared under various names such as ''salmon'', ''dull pink'', ''noble pink'' or ''aurora''.
