ARMANDO (Amsterdam 1929-2018), born Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd, is a Dutch painter, sculptor, poet, writer, violinist, actor, journalist, film, television and theater maker. Born in Amsterdam, he spent his childhood in Amersfoort. Later he studied art history for several years. Armando was involved in various artist groups, such as the Liga Nieuw Beelden, the Informele Groep and the Nul-movement. The members of the Nul group brought into their work an entirely new, astonishing vision of familiar things. He has lived in Amstelveen since 1989, but had plans to settle in Amersfoort, the city of 'his' museum, the Armando Museum. In October 2007 the museum was completely destroyed by a blazing fire, whereby almost the entire existing collection was lost.
