Armando was born as Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd. He was an endlessly versatile artist: painter, sculptor, writer, poet, journalist, violinist and actor. He was active well into his old age, driven by the urge to continually create something new.
Living near Camp Amersfoort as a child, he was immediately confronted with the horrors of the Second World War. It is not surprising that his work is about violence, about perpetrators and victims, about good and especially about evil. Evil lurks in everything and everyone: perpetrators can become victims and victims can become perpetrators.
Armando 's paintings and sculptures are overwhelming because of their monumental mentality and sobriety in material, color and form. The rough, pasty skin enhances the visual power of his work.
