Antoni Tàpies i Puig was born on December 13, 1923 in Barcelona, son of Josep Tàpies i Mestre and Maria Puig i Guerra.
Antoni Tàpies is one of the pioneers of the post-war Spanish avant-garde. Social themes predominate in his work, his paintings emphasize the suffering and oppression that typify the period. His earlier works were influenced by surrealism.
From 1950 he often lived in Paris. Tàpies started out as a surrealist artist and was influenced by Paul Klee and Joan Miró, but soon turned to abstract expressionist painting.
In 1984 he founded the Fundació Tàpies. He found shelter in Barcelona in 1990 and owns an exhibition space and nearly two thousand examples of his work, which is often characterized as material painting.
Tàpies died on February 6, 2012 in Barcelona.
