Antoni Tàpies is one of the pioneers of the post-war Spanish avant-garde. Social themes dominate in his work, his paintings emphasize the suffering and oppression that typifies the period. His earlier works were influenced by surrealism. From 1950 he often stayed in Paris. Tàpies started as a surrealist artist and was influenced by Paul Klee and Joan Miró, but soon turned towards abstract expressionist painting. In 1984 he founded the Fundació Tàpies. He found shelter in Barcelona in 1990 and has an exhibition space and almost two thousand examples of his work, which is often characterized as material painting. Tàpies died on February 6, 2012 in Barcelona.
