Antoni Tàpies is one of the pioneers of the postwar Spanish avant-garde. Social themes predominated in his work, his paintings emphasizing the suffering and oppression that typified the period. His earlier works were influenced by surrealism. Starting in 1950, he often stayed in Paris. Tàpies began as a surrealist artist, under the influence of Paul Klee and Joan Miró, but soon leaned toward abstract-expressionist painting. In 1984, he founded the Fundació Tàpies. This found a home in Barcelona in 1990 and owns an exhibition space and nearly two thousand examples of his work that is often characterized as matter painting.
