André Goezu was born on 5 July 1939 into a Jewish family in Antwerp. He is a graphic artist, etcher, painter and draftsman.
André Goezu studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the National Higher Institute in Antwerp.
At the age of 28, he finished his studies at the Academy as a laureate and was the first Fleming to receive a scholarship to continue his studies in Paris.
The war in Antwerp during the 1940s-1944 forced his family to look for a safer shelter outside the city, in Wuustwezel, among the trees. Thus, in those years when his family was persecuted and destroyed, he built up a world of symbols: a tree, in which leaves and branches would form protective arms, a horse, an anonymous shadowy figure, a peacock, a bird with outstretched wings.
In order to be able to speak about those years of fear, unrest and danger, he used pen and pencil and thus entered the world of art.
His work exudes a personal atmosphere: confidential, idyllic, often melancholic and moving. The memories of the war help determine the color and emotional palette of his work.
Since 1968 he has settled in Paris in the solitude of his studio. From 1983 he became a guest teacher at the National Higher Institute of Antwerp, in addition to his appointment as a teacher at the Ecole Nationale de Beaux Arts in Paris.
