Product description
Offered this exceptional etching by Amedeo Modigliani called The Red Head from 1915. Signed and in good condition. With frame.
Red head (under the title Head of a young red-haired woman), belongs to a group of similar painted figures by Modigliani in 1915. The Cézanne sketch technique brings it closer to the famous Portrait of Pablo Picasso (1915, cat. Rais. 1, no. 85) and the Portrait of Henri Laurens (1915, Lucerne, coll. Rosengart). The violence of his optimistic coloring, in line with the Fauve chromatism of Matisse and Derain or the Oceanic coloring of Picasso's Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), his typically primitivist morphology, more or less inspired by the Fang masks of Gabon (oval thin face , asymmetry, quarter-brie nose, plugged eyes, small mouth) make the head look unrealistic. They even transform it into a mask, endowed with the enigmatic and magical aura given to tribal masks. Thus projected out of the darkness by the bloody pigment of a severed head, Red Head shines like an apparition, that of one of the ultimate icons of Cubism. From The Red Head, c.1915 (oil on canvas) by Modigliani, Amedeo (1884-1920); Musee National d Art Moderne, Paris, France. Et Braun et cie 1969.
