He graduated from the University of Münster in Graphic Design and Art. He subsequently taught at this university for four years.
He subsequently made a career as a visual artist and publisher of his own work. Gockel is inspired by German expressionism and by great examples such as Pablo Picasso and Albrecht Dürer.
The techniques Gockel works with are:
acrylic, often in combination with self-prepared tar and/or oil paint; copper engraving, as a monotype and limited edition; woodcut, linoleum in limited edition; sculpture (steel and bronze) in limited edition; screen print in limited edition
He prefers to paint live on an oversized canvas during vernissages, often inviting visitors to paint along with him according to his instructions.
