A wonderful set of 7 Japanese Kokeshi dolls. Kokeshi have been made for 200 years in the Tohoku region north of Tokyo. Originally they were made by furniture makers as children's toys from leftover pieces of wood. After travelers in the popular hot springs noticed the dolls, they became popular souvenirs. Each region has its own distinctive style. This is a beautiful traditional set from different places. These traditional Kokeshi have dimensions between 14.5 cm and 37 cm. These beautiful collectibles are a popular souvenir and gift. There are at least 12 official styles of kokeshi, each named after a place and having a set of rules about shape, color and motifs. The 12 main types are Hijiori, Kijiyama, Nakanosawa, Nanbu, Naruko, Sakunami, Togatta, Tsuchiyu, Tsugaru, Yajiro, Yamagata and Zao. Kokeshi dolls are often seen as good luck charms and are a wonderful gift symbolizing good fortune and prosperity.
